Equipment and Gear Rental

Delivery and Rental Terms

The following terms apply to the rental of kayaks, canoes, bicycles, and other equipment (hereinafter referred to as equipment) from Petkeljärvi Center (hereinafter referred to as the Lessor). These terms become binding on both parties when the customer (hereinafter referred to as the Renter) has accepted the rental terms when making a reservation.

1. General Terms and Price List
Canoes, kayaks, rowing boats, and bicycles are rented only to adults; rentals for minors are only with an adult.

Kayaks, canoes, and rowing boats are rented only to persons who can swim. It is recommended that participants are able to act calmly and swim at least 25 meters in paddling gear after falling into the water and their head has momentarily gone under the surface.

When paddling, appropriate paddling vests must be used.
Equipment is not rented to intoxicated persons.
The rental price includes a canoe, paddles, paddling vests, and for FIT96 kayaks, spray skirts and a bailer or similar device for water removal.
Bicycle rental includes a helmet, a high-visibility vest, and a pump.

The Renter is obligated to prove their identity. The valid rental price list is available on the petkeljarvi.fi website.

Rental prices are valid at Petkeljärventie 61, 82900 Ilomantsi

Transport to other locations according to a separate price list and agreement.

2. Payment of Rent

Equipment rental is paid at the time of rental with cash, MobilePay, bank transfer, or with an invoice sent by email in advance.

3. Cancellations and Weather Clause

If the renter has to cancel a reservation and cancels at least 72 hours before the start of the reservation, the cancellation is free of charge, and the paid rental amount will be fully refunded.

If the cancellation occurs less than 72 hours but no later than 24 hours before the start of the reservation, 50% of the paid reservation will be refunded to the renter, or 50% of the reservation value will be invoiced if the reservation has been unpaid.

If the cancellation is made later without a valid reason (illness → medical certificate), the lessor has the right to charge the full equipment rental fee according to the reservation.

Paddling and rowing always take place subject to weather conditions. In case of strong wind or rain, both parties have the right to cancel the paddling equipment reservation before the start of the reservation. In reservations canceled due to weather conditions (local weather), the payment will be fully refunded to the renter.

If the cancellation occurs during the reservation period, no refunds will be made.

Petkeljärvi Center is not obligated to compensate the customer for any harm, damage, or costs that may arise from natural conditions, such as insects, voles, and mice, or unexpected weather changes.

4. Start of Rental Period and Equipment Pick-up

Equipment is always handed over intact and ready for use.

The renter must arrive to pick up equipment related to their rental, such as paddling/life vests, etc., ½ an hour before the start of the rental period.

Example: The renter has made an online reservation for a canoe for the period 10 AM-2 PM. The renter must arrive at the Petkeljärvi Hiking Center info desk at 9:30 AM, at which time it will be checked whether they have paid for their reservation, safety instructions will be reviewed, and the rental equipment accessories will be handed over. Delays must be reported immediately. If the rental period is reserved for 10 AM-2 PM and the renter arrives only at 12 PM, their rental period will still end at
2 PM, and the rental will be paid for four hours.

5. Use of Equipment

Paddling and rowing are done at one's own risk, and swimming ability is essential. When paddling/rowing, a paddling or life vest and, if necessary, other safety equipment must be used.
Paddling equipment is not suitable for whitewater paddling.

Cycling is done at one's own risk. The renter must have previous experience in mountain biking if they intend to cycle on hiking and trekking trails that are not designed for mountain biking. A helmet and a high-visibility vest must be worn when cycling.

The renter is obliged to take care of the rented equipment as a diligent person takes care of their own, and commits to exercising special care and caution.

The renter may not make their own adjustments to the equipment (excluding bicycle saddle height adjustment according to the given instructions).

The renter agrees to return the equipment in the condition it was in when rented, and, if necessary, to compensate for any damage, defects, and lost parts. If the equipment breaks during the rental period, the renter is obliged to compensate for repair costs (new part + replacement work); if the rental equipment is completely destroyed or lost, the deductible is the recommended price of a comparable product.

The renter is obligated to immediately report any defects in the equipment. The renter is responsible for complying with transport and safety regulations when using and transporting the equipment.
The renter may not rent or otherwise transfer the equipment to a third party.
The condition of the equipment is checked upon return.
Equipment may not be left in a public area unsupervised.

The renter rents and uses the equipment at their own risk and must ensure they have their own valid insurance, meaning Petkeljärvi Center is not responsible for illness, injury, damage to or loss of personal belongings. The renter releases Petkeljärvi Center from all liability concerning damages caused to the renter or other persons.

6. End of Rental Period and Equipment Return

The equipment is to be left at the pre-agreed time and location. The renter agrees to return the equipment in the condition it was in when rented, and, if necessary, to compensate for any damage, defects, and lost parts.

Example: The rental period made with an online reservation ends at 2 PM, meaning that by 2 PM, the equipment must be returned in tidy condition, cleaned and maintained in such a state that it can be rented out again without cleaning and maintenance operations.

If bringing the equipment back into usable condition requires cleaning and maintenance operations, the renter may be charged reasonable costs incurred by the required operations.
If the equipment has not been returned by the end of the rental period, and no extension of the rental period has been agreed upon with the lessor, and the renter cannot be reached, the matter will be reported to the authorities.

7. Lessor's Obligations

The lessor must hand over the equipment to the renter in working condition at the agreed time and place.
In addition, the lessor is obligated to provide the renter with instructions on the use of the equipment (however, instruction on equipment use does not mean guided paddling).

8. Renter's Actions in Case of Errors, Damages, and Thefts

The renter must immediately notify the lessor of any defect in the equipment or any damage or theft that has occurred to the equipment. Theft and significant personal injury must be reported immediately to the lessor and the police.

9. Return of Equipment Before or After the Agreed Rental Period

If the renter returns the equipment before the end of the agreed rental period, the rental fee will be determined according to the previously agreed rental period.

If the renter returns the equipment after the end of the agreed rental period (this having been agreed before the end of the rental period, e.g., by phone), the rental fee will be determined according to the actual rental period.

If the equipment is returned much later than agreed without prior arrangement, and the next renter's reservation is canceled, the renter may be obligated to compensate the lessor for the price of this rental as well.

10. Termination of Contract

The lessor has the right to terminate this contract during the rental period if it becomes apparent that the renter materially breaches this contract, the renter, in the lessor's assessment, is unable to handle the equipment properly, or that the renter's actions are not safe in the lessor's opinion.

If the lessor terminates the rental agreement, the renter is obliged to return the equipment to the lessor without delay. Upon termination of the contract, the renter is obliged to pay the rental fee for the actual rental period and any other costs incurred.

Valid until further notice.
